National Youth Week in South Australia

The message from the South Australian (SA) Minister for Youth is available on the SA Minister's page.

National Youth Week (NYW) 2012 in SA is going to be BIGGER and BETTER than EVER!

Young people will come together to celebrate, be recognised and valued for the contributions they have made to their local communities, participate in strength based workshops, experience events and activities that they would not normally have the opportunity to participate in and have a whole heap of FUN!.

There is a vast array of opportunities for young South Australian’s to  ‘Imagine.  Create.  Inspire,’ not only themselves but their peers and community members in 2012.

The South Australian Government  with the financial support of Beyondblue, have provided $170,000 in grant funding to 69 government, local governments with operating Youth Advisory Committees (YACs) and non-government organisations working with young people. The funding will support  the implementation and running approximately 150 NYW events and activities throughout the state with two thirds of them being in regional and rural South Australia.

Funding for events addressed one or more of the following priority areas:

  • health and wellbeing (with a specific focus on positive mental health messaging related to depression and anxiety)
  • youth engagement and participation, and
  • education, employment and training (with a specific focus on transition and pathways

NYW is for young people by young people…So, the question is are you ready to ‘Imagine. Create. Inspire?’

Launch of National Youth Week 2012 in SA

The District Council of Grant’s Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) was successful in their application to host the South Australian launch of National Youth Week 2012 to be held on Friday 13 April 2012.

“Holding the state launch event in a regional centre, especially one as vibrant as Mt Gambier, provides an excellent opportunity for the region’s young people to develop and deliver a major event that showcases their local community” said Minister for Youth, the Hon Ian Hunter MLC on announcing the location of the launch event.

“It will also be a fantastic way for young people in the region to celebrate National Youth Week.”

To be staged at the Old Mt Gambier Gaol, the event will involve live music, dance, expression art, multicultural activities, giant rides, food stalls and information booths. Organisers expect around 2000 young people from the lower south east of the Limestone Coast to attend the launch.

The District Council of Grant YAC will partner with the City of Mt Gambier YAC, the Pangula Manammurna Aboriginal Youth Action Committee and the Mount Gambier Migrant Resource Centre to run the event.

The State Launch will take place on Friday 13 April from 2.00 pm. Check out the calendar of events for more details.
