National youth Week in Western Australia
The message from the Western Australian (WA) Minister for Youth is available on the WA Minister's page.
The Department for Communities—Youth has been collaborating with the young people (through three youth committees, including one representing young people in regional WA) and stakeholders to develop projects and events for National Youth Week in Western Australia.
Key Events
Launch – South West “Grass Roots Festival”
National Youth Week WA will be launched in Bunbury, South West region of Western Australia with a “Grass Roots Festival”. This is a partnership between the Department for Communities, City of Bunbury, Investing in Our Youth Inc., Youthbeyondblue, Shire of Dardanup and other local government authorities, community groups and the corporate sector.
The festival includes a performance stage for local young artists, BMX and skate demonstrations, wellbeing and education sideshow alley, and an urban art project. An issues forum will empower young people to find local solutions to youth issues.
Joshua Cunniffe a local young person will be the MC and Patron for the launch. Joshua is the Ambassador of Lifeline Australia and is keen to be actively involved in National Youth Week, in particular on a display and conversations around mental health and wellbeing.
Kickstart Festival
The Kickstart Festival is the key metropolitan event which will include the youth markets, performances and a range of interactive activities in the main cultural precinct of Perth.
Youth Hub
A Youth Hub will open throughout National Youth Week. The hub will be a one-stop-shop for National Youth Week, offering young people a venue to discuss current issues, speak to relevant service providers, enjoy entertainment and interactive activities and socialise.
The Kickstart Festival and the Youth Hub are run by the young people and Propel Youth Arts.
Youth Forum
Young people will run a series of forums to discuss current issues affecting young people in WA. The discussions will take place at a central location in Perth. Relevant youth service providers will attend discussions to offer advice and provide resources.
National Youth Week Grants
$80 000 has been allocated to 80 National Youth Week events and projects across the state. Two thirds of the successful applications are from regional/rural centres.
WA Youth Awards 2012
The WA Youth Awards challenge negative community perceptions of young people by highlighting their achievements and positive contributions. The WA Youth Awards were established in 1999 to recognise outstanding young people, youth workers and youth led groups in WA.
